Chinese New Year

Image
Chinese New Year is celebrated by more than 20% of the world. It’s the most important holiday in China and to Chinese people all over. Here are 21 interesting facts that you probably didn’t know about Chinese New Year. 1. Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival:  In China, you'll hear it being called chunjie (春节), or the Spring Festival. It’s still very wintry, but the holiday marks the end of the coldest days. People welcome spring and what it brings along: planting and harvests, new beginnings and fresh starts. 2. There's no set date for Chinese New Year: According to the Lunar calendar, the Spring Festival is on January 1st and lasts until the 15th (the full moon). Unlike western holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas, when you try to calculate it with the solar (Gregorian) calendar, the date is all over the place. Chinese New Year ranges from January 21 to February 20. In 2019, it occurs on February 5th. The lunar calendar is stil

Compliment Day

Image
What is National Compliment Day? On January 24, celebrate National Compliment Day by going all out with praise. The power of a compliment is pretty remarkable: either giving or receiving one can boost your happiness and confidence — making the act a win-win. You never know when someone could use some good vibes, so spread the positivity by giving someone a reason to smile! History of National Compliment Day Complimenting people on a good job, or praising them for work we admire, is so ingrained in human nature that we do it without even giving it a second thought. Which is why we believe it’s important to compliment a good compliment! So, without further ado, here’s 3 of our favorite compliments in history: 1. George R.R. Martin’s fan letter. Before he was a best selling author, Martin was a teenage fan boy in love with the world of comics. In 1964, he wrote a letter addressed to Stan Lee and Don Heck. In his letter, he praised the latest two issues of The Avengers

Invisible Illness Diary #26 - Loss of Understanding - Kate Marie Robbins

Image
January 21, 2020: This photo above is a big mood these days. Well, really my whole life, but still. I wish more people understood this. I do the best I can any given day, but it feels like it's not enough for some people. I know I shouldn't get myself down about it because people don't understand. But when people get mad at you for it, it's hard not to take it to heart. Something happened at work that has brought this to the forefront, but I won't go into details. It's just frustrating as fuck. And hurts. I do my best. I show up every day I work and do the best I can. And that's all I can do. I have to remind myself that.

This soundtrack list is going to be set up a little differently because of how this anthology was put together. It's a collection of interviews with musicians. So it's put together by band in the book. Under each of those is a list of bands that have influenced them. Being that said, there may be some duplicate bands, but I wanted to show each of their influences. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Image
Martin Luther King Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., and sometimes referred to as MLK Day) is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. King's birthday is January 15. The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The earliest Monday for this holiday is January 15 and the latest is January 21. King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the f

Life with Depression #39 - Sandy Ashley

1-17-20: This week has been a little rough. My knee pain got worse. I went to the Dr today. I got a brace and x-rays done. I did get refills on my depression meds though too so yay for that. I'm kinda worried about my knee. I hope nothing really wrong with it. I won't know more until next week though. Just need it to get better. It's hard to do anything cause it hurts to move it. It hurts to not move it for a while. It's just painful. Icing it makes it seem like it is on fire. Which doesn't seem normal at all. On on the right path though.

Invisible Illness Diary #25 - Migraine - Kate Marie Robbins

Image
January 13, 2020: For the most part things have been pretty good. Aside from last Thursday, that is. I woke up with a migraine. That's the first one I've had since I went gluten free. I have no idea what triggered it. I woke up and had it. But taking my migraine meds helped. There were many days before when I had a migraine, nothing would help. I really wish I knew what that was about, but I'm hoping it was just a one time thing and not a pattern again. So fingers crossed I stay migraine free.

Tamil Thai Pongo Festival - India

Image
Pongal (தைப்பொà®™்கல், /ˈθaɪˈpoÊŠÅ‹ÊŒl/, also spelled Poá¹…kal), also referred to as Thai Pongal (also spelled Tai Pongal), is a multi-day Hindu harvest festival of South India, particularly in the Tamil community. It is observed at the start of the month Tai according to Tamil solar calendar, and this is typically about January 14. It is dedicated to the Hindu sun god, the Surya, and corresponds to Makara Sankranthi, the harvest festival under many regional names celebrated throughout India. The three days of the Pongal festival are called Bhogi Pongal, Surya Pongal and Maattu Pongal. According to tradition, the festival marks the end of winter solstice, and the start of the sun's six-month-long journey northwards (the Uttaraayanam) when the sun enters the zodiac Makara (Capricorn). The festival is named after the ceremonial "Pongal", which means "to boil, overflow" and refers to the traditional dish prepared from the new harvest of rice boiled in milk with

Orthodox New Year

Image
The Orthodox New Year, also known as the Old New Year, according to the Julian calendar is on January 14 in the Gregorian calendar. The Julian calendar pre-dates the Gregorian calendar. What Do People Do? Many Orthodox Christians who observe the New Year’s Day date from the Julian calendar may spend the day reflecting on the previous year and think about meaningful resolutions for the New Year. Many people celebrate the day with family or friends to welcome the New Year.  Activities may include fireworks, large meals and music entertainment. Some churches hold Orthodox New Year events such as parties or dinners. Those who attend these events may pray for the New Year and toast their drinks. Some churches host gala dinners to raise funds for charitable causes or church building restorations. Public Life The Orthodox New Year is not a federal public holiday but it may be a regional or non-official holiday limited to regional areas or religious groups in countries su
