The Sounds of Advice #58: Vacation on a Budget

Vacation destinations on a budget:

Aisling:

Sandy: Vacations are something we all love to take. However, they can be pretty pricey as well. Here are some tips on ways to save on your next vacation!!

Flying makes traveling easier and faster however, if you are going with others driving would be better and would save you a little bit of money as well. While driving, be sure to bring a cooloer with ice. You can pack in some water or if you prefer pop/soda. You could even bring snacks alone as well. When I was yonnger we had stuff in the cooler as well as snacks like cheez its. This is a great way to play games in the car as well. Now you might think there are hotel stays. It is possible however if you are like me you have about at least one decent friend in about every state. Chances are they may let you crash for the night. So you can save money as well. Now these may not seem like a lot but if you break it down you save on having to stop at hotels at night, eating those pricey fast food places all the time I mean you will still have to eat meals. Just helps to make it less with the snacks you already have. If you know where you are going to be staying a few days. Booking your hotel online before hand (as far as you can) will usually help you save money as well.

Michaelle: My Favorite Vacations on a Budget
1. Camping! Sites are inexpensive and this gets you outside and into nature. If you are super adventurous, you can even venture into public lands and camp for free.
2. Road Trip! Often as inexpensive as a car ride to nearby relatives or friends for a weekend visit. Check out free things to do in the area. Explore shops, galleries, museums, flea markets, farmer markets, and tourist type activities for additional fun.
3. Hotels and Resorts- Many will have ongoing discounts during less busy days and nights. Check out the different amenities you and your family would most enjoy like indoor/outdoor pools, arcades, movie theaters, eateries, bowling, kid fun centers, etc.

Kate: 1. Grand Canyon
Why go: It doesn't get more affordable than camping, and the views from the North Rim are priceless. Save even more by visiting on one of the National Park Service's free entrance days.

2. San Antonio
Why go: Home to the legendary Alamo and River Walk, San Antonio is constantly buzzing with things to do. While hotels and restaurants in the heart of the city will charge a pretty penny for their convenient location, room rates here are still cheaper than other Texas travel destinations.

3. Las Vegas
Why go: If you can stay away from the casino floor, Las Vegas doesn't have to cost a fortune. Although Vegas is known as a weekend getaway, if you can plan a midweek trip you can save with discounted hotel rates. Plus, many top attractions, such as the Bellagio Fountains, are free to see.

4. Tucson
Why go: Due to its warm weather year-round, Tucson is ideal for a winter escape. Drive along the Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway to diverse vegetation along the Santa Catalina Range or take in the 18th-century architecture at the Mission San Xavier del Bac

5. Albuquerque
Why go: Visit Albuquerque for one of its many annual festivals, including the popular International Balloon Fiesta. If you can stand the heat, you'll find even deeper discounts in the summer.

6. Memphis
Why go: Immerse yourself in musical history in Memphis. Visit Elvis Presley's kingdom at Graceland, tour the birthplace of rock 'n' roll at Sun Studio and groove to the live music along Beale Street.

7. Williamsburg
Why go: This Virginia town is both affordable and educational. Step back in time at Colonial Williamsburg and then head to the Williamsburg Premium Outlets for a discounted shopping spree.

8. Salt Lake City
Why go: With average hotel prices hovering at less than $150 per night, an inexpensive trip to Salt Lake City is possible year-round. Save money on activities by participating in free events in Temple Square.

9. Phoenix
Why go: While hitting the golf course could rack up hefty green fees, Phoenix is a great home base for exploring attractions throughout the Southwest, including Camelback Mountain.

10. Gatlinburg
Why go: It's all about the outdoors in this Tennessee town. Home to three entrances to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg shines in the fall when the leaves change colors.

Also, from personal experience, use a site like Travelocity or Expedia to book flights, hotels, etc. You can save a lot of money that way that can be used for another part of the vacation.
