Bullying at School: What You Can Do

Image
Are you being bullied? Do you see bullying at your school? There are things you can do to keep yourself and the kids you know safe from bullying. Treat Everyone with Respect: Nobody should be mean to others. Stop and think before you say or do something that could hurt someone. If you feel like being mean to someone, find something else to do. Play a game, watch TV, or talk to a friend. Talk to an adult you trust. They can help you find ways to be nicer to others. Keep in mind that everyone is different. Not better or worse. Just different.   If you think you have bullied someone in the past, apologize. Everyone feels better. What to Do If You’re Bullied There are things you can do if you are being bullied: Look at the kid bullying you and tell him or her to stop in a calm, clear voice. You can also try to laugh it off. This works best if joking is easy for you. It could catch the kid bullying you off guard. If speaking up seems too hard or ...

Rise Above: Writing Prompts

Image
Don't know what to write about for our upcoming anthology, Rise Above? We've scoured the internet and come up with some that would make for some interesting stories! Below you will find ten writing prompts to help you if you're drawing a blank.  1. Imagine that you have decided to become an “anti-bully," a person who says nice things to build people up instead of mean things to beat people down.  2. Create a story about a bully who decides to change his ways. Determine what it is that made the bully want to change and detail how his life is different after switching “mean" to “serene." 3. One of the reasons that people are mean is in an effort to be more popular. Imagine that popularity was completely different and it was based on how nice kids could be to one another. If that were to happen, who would be the popular kids in your school? If the meanest people were the least popular, who would be the least popular kids? 4. A demon is as...

Bullying: Signs to Watch For

Image
Warning Signs for Bullying:  There are many warning signs that may indicate that someone is affected by bullying—either being bullied or bullying others. Recognizing the warning signs is an important first step in taking action against bullying. Not all children who are bullied or are bullying others ask for help. It is important to talk with children who show signs of being bullied or bullying others. These warning signs can also point to other issues or problems, such as depression or substance abuse. Talking to the child can help identify the root of the problem. Signs a Child Is Being Bullied: Look for changes in the child. However, be aware that not all children who are bullied exhibit warning signs. Some signs that may point to a bullying problem are: Unexplainable injuries Lost or destroyed clothing, books, electronics, or jewelry Frequent headaches or stomach aches, feeling sick or faking illness Changes in eating habits, like suddenl...

Rise Above: When Does It End?

Image
When Does It End? By Kate Marie Robbins I sit and stare at the news story in mute horror. All those lives lost. The words that ring in my mind...when does it all end? When does the hate end? When do the bullets stop flying? When do the hateful words stop flying from our mouths? When did we become like this? How do we change? When is enough enough? Will it end with me? Will it end with you? It should, because no one should have to die because they're different. No one should be ridiculed because of who they are. We can take a stand and make a change. It starts here. It starts today. And just maybe it will end with me and you. Submissions are due June 30th

Karma: #metoo

Image
Karma  by Anonymous  I watched my mom be abused for many years—seventeen to be exact, so you would think I could spot the signs ten miles away, but I was wrong. I met him April 15 th , 2007. It was like those story book moments where you’re with a friend but connect with someone on such a higher level. We talked for hours, had a couple drinks, and I forced myself to go home. All I could think about was him. His eyes. His smile. And oh, the way his lips tasted when he kissed me good night. Three minutes is all it took—three minutes to steal my heart and three minutes to begin the worst nine years of my life. The abuse started June 21st, 2007. He called me a dumbass because he wanted to be single for his 21st birthday. Now mind you I had moved me and my son who was just over the age of one into his tiny apartment because he wanted me around all the time (that’s the first sign, control). Fast forward a year. I stopped contact with him for about eight months. I...

The Sounds of Advice #46: Verbal Bullying

Image
Verbal bullying is a means of using words in a negative way such as insults, teasing, put downs, etc., to gain power over someone else's life. Many people's lives have been destroyed by verbal abuse at home, in schools and business settings. Aisling:  When it comes to verbal bullying you may feel angry and flustered and want to retaliate verbally as well. Don't, that will give the bully the reaction they are looking for. Talk to someone you trust about it & stay away from the person who is verbally bullying you if possible. Do your best to ignore them. Eventually in most situations they will give up & move on. Sandy:  If you are being verbally bullied. Walk away from the person. They may keep saying things as you do, but go find help and let someone know what happened. So that way things can be handled. If you don't have anyone that can handle it, just make sure the words that are told you that they don't bother you. The less reaction you ...
