The Fallen Scientist (And Last Week's Solution)

Image
Solution: (1) Lilly’s sister, Anne Kincaid. (2) Lilly and Anne were playing a prank on the boys. Anne made them chase after an imaginary killer, then stabbed her sister for real. (3) The fake knife had its handlegrip facing the feet, while the real knife was turned the other way. Explanation: The police noticed the discrepancy between Mark’s and Larry’s description of the knife’s position in Lilly’s chest and that shown in the crime scene photos. Someone had obviously removed the knife and reversed it. Or stuck in a new knife, one with a blade. Anne was brought in for questioning. Eventually the 17-year-old confessed. For years, she had been jealous of her sister. Lilly got everything: praise and attention and, most galling of all, a first rate education that their parents had saved years for. It was Lilly who had thought up the prank. They would lure their boyfriends into the old mansion and then scare them with a murder, just like in the movies. Anne instant...

Empowering lives through HOPE. HOPE Coalition is here for the really tough stuff, serving the abused and disadvantaged–victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and homelessness. Simply put, we restore hope. We rebuild lives. As the only agency in two rural counties providing domestic violence, child abuse, and sexual assault programming and services, there is, sadly, no shortage of people in need of our assistance. Currently, we serve over 1,700 people each year in Goodhue and Wabasha Counties, MN, and in Western Pierce County, WI. Additionally, the Haven of Hope, our domestic violence shelter, accepts women and their children from anywhere in Minnesota, and occasionally from out-of-state if needed for safety reasons. Website Facebook Twitter There help to find home for dogs, cats and other animals so that they don't have to be put down like a lot of shelters do. I know this is huge with me because I know that all animals can ...

The Ghostly Killer (and Last Week's Solution)

Image
Last week's solution:  (1) The murderer was Henry Alfonso aka Burt Camfurt. (2) The method was poisoning by absorption through the skin. (3) Alfonso did it to prevent Stork from showing photos of him and his lover Greta on nationwide television. Explanation: Upon arriving at work this morning and reading today’s script, knowing how many criminals had been spotted and captured as a result of this show and fearing the same fate, Henry Alfonso, now known as Burt Camfurt, rummaged through the flora around the Hollywood Reservoir and discovered some monkshood growing amid the underbrush. He was quite familiar with it, both from the term paper he’d written in college — ‘The Healing and Poisonous Qualities of Common North American Plants’ — and because it was the same poison, native to the Rockies of New Mexico as well as Southern California, that he had used to murder his wife. He ground the leaves up into a syrup with the mortar and pestle he always kept in his m...

Creative Wednesday: Mormo

Image
By Sandy Ashley I wasn’t the best kid around, but I certainly wasn’t the worst either. I knew a lot of kids at school that were way more misbehaved than myself. I was bad enough to be visited from Mormo once though.      It was a few years ago. I was causing trouble at home and at school. I was always playing jokes on people—just about anything I could think of. Although, I never took it to the level of anyone getting hurt. I liked jokes, but I hated seeing people get hurt. I did sometimes get the jokes recorded and posted them on YouTube.      I had recently played a joke on my mom. I put some tape on the spray nozzle in the kitchen sink. When she turned the water on she would get sprayed instead of the water coming from the faucet. It was a classic, harmless joke. At least I didn’t think it was that bad.      My family were the only ones I could record. I was at the kitchen table and was leaning back ...

The Sounds of Advice #63: Talking to Children about Violence

Image
Sandy:  I always tell my kids that violence isn't the answer. It will only make matters worse. Sit with your child or children and tell them what violence is. Let them know it is wrong and what can happen with it. Bring up big events that were violence related. If need be show them articles on it if need be. Just make sure that they understand what you are telling them. Ask them questions to make sure they understand. Kate:  1. Encourage your kids to talk about what they see and hear. 2. Limit exposure to violence. 3. Reassure your child. 4. Stand firm. 5. Let your kids know your standards. 6. Offer tools to cope with feelings. 7. Talk about groups. 8. Educate your kids. 9. Control your own behavior. 10. Seek support.

The Unresolved Murder

Image
“Henry Alfonso disappeared from Albuquerque after the mysterious poisoning of his wife three years ago,” said the aging former matinee idol Ronald Stork as he stood before the TV camera, the picturesque Hollywood Reservoir, sycamore and pepper trees to his rear. “Cut,” yelled 25-year-old director Dick Dearhart. “We’re losing the sun.Need some fill. Take five, Mr. Stork.” The TV show “Unresolved Murders” was often shot here only two miles from its Burbank home offices. The Hollywood Hills passed for Kansas and Idaho, the Rockies and upper New York state, and the travel time saved a bundle. Producer George Mongrove, 32, was always watching the bottom line. Three days ago, furious that Stork had threatened to walk if his salary wasn’t tripled, the aggressive Mangrove had threatened to replace him with a younger host. Stork said in that case, he’d start up his own show to compete with this one. Today, in front of the crew, they were both pretending the argument had neve...

Music and Memory

Image
This is a charity that has recently come to my attention through my current employer.  I'd like to share a bit about them. We will be putting together an anthology at some point in the future with proceeds being donated to them.  MUSIC & MEMORY℠ is a non-profit organization that brings personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm through digital music technology, vastly improving quality of life. We train nursing home staff and other elder care professionals, as well as family caregivers, how to create and provide personalized playlists using iPods and related digital audio systems that enable those struggling with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories. By providing access and education, and by creating a network of MUSIC & MEMORY℠ Certified organizations, we aim to make this form of personalized therapeutic music a standard of care throughout th...
